A Guernsey firm has electrified a Smart and in doing so has produced a car that does the financial equivalent of almost 300mpg. When road tax switches onto fuel in less than three months’ time, its 1p-a-mile energy costs will equate to around 350mpg. The grapevine brought to Pete Burnard’s ears reports of a couple of guys working on an electric Smart down at the old Rocquaine fish factory. But before that particular memo came to the top of his pile, Mark Parr – of Aircraft Servicing Guernsey and engineer and designer Qualtech – called to offer Pete a few days with the car Mark and his brother had converted.
